SneakPeek is a test you can take at home early on in your pregnancy that tests to find out your baby’s gender only. You may have never heard of it before or are apprehensive about trying it due to others saying it’s inaccurate. So does the test work?
My experience
Once I found out I was pregnant most of the people around me began to ask if I was going to find out the gender early on. My husband and I knew we wanted to find out the gender, we just weren’t sure when or how we would like to go about doing so.
The things we did know is we weren’t going to do a gender reveal and we also wanted to find out alone together. I found out at 3 weeks 2 days that I was pregnant so very early on. This made is to where we had lots of time to think about things before even going into a doctor’s office which wasn’t scheduled until 8 weeks.
As first-time parents we were eager to have it feel real and start preparing so we ended up ordering a sneak peek test. I took it at 6 weeks and 2 days as we had a trip planned and wanted to find out while on it. I got the Snap version of the test that goes on your arm and is less likely to get contaminated compared to their finger poke test.
I was nervous to take it that early, but didn’t want to wait until I got back from our trip so we took the gamble. SneakPeek says they have accurate results from 6 weeks on, but I know many people decide to take it later on in hopes it will be more accurate.
I really did not want to have a false result so I made sure to clean my bathroom where I was taking the test extremely thoroughly. I knew nothing in the room could possibly cross-contaminate the test result after I was done cleaning. The only thing I could think of that possibly could contaminate the test was my arm.
I took the test with my mom’s help. There were no males present for the test. We followed every instruction thoroughly and made sure not to touch anything, wash our hands often, and let them air dry throughout the test.
After the test was done we packaged it up and brought it to the post office to get shipped to their lab. Sadly, the tracking system had a problem so it said my package had not been shipped out all the way until the moment I got the email that the lab had received it. So I did not have any idea when I’d be getting my results since I didn’t know if the package was stuck in transit or was moving along normally.
They emailed 3 days after I shipped it out letting me know they received it. The following day just under 24 hours later they emailed me with the results. I did not choose to pay for the fast shipping and results, but I still felt like this was extremely fast.
So was SneakPeek accurate?
Yes! In my experience it was. We are having a boy. SneakPeek let us know we were having a boy and we have now confirmed this to be true with a NIPT test as well as our 20-week anatomy scan.
My thoughts
I think having the SneakPeek test available to take at home and test so early is really cool. I love that there are new medical advancements that make more options for families during their pregnancies. Unfortunately, it does of its downsides being able to to test so early as well as being done at home. You may experience or hear of people experiencing the results being wrong. They do however offer a refund if you send them their birth certificate showing it was inaccurate results. It’s nice to know if they are wrong you won’t be paying for the test even if you do have to wait most of your pregnancy to get the money back.
Even though it was accurate for us and we did our due diligence of making sure we did everything we could to make sure we did not alter the results it still did not give us a definitive answer in our minds.
Once we got the results we were excited to know, but it didn’t feel like we actually knew the answer. It felt like we had an idea, but we definitely were hesitant to accept that answer to be true. So even though we were excited to have the results it made us more anxious to be able to get it confirmed with one of the other tests.
Would I take the SneakPeek test again?
I’m not sure. I liked finding out as early as I did with the possibility of it being a boy, but with it not being as accurate as tests like the NIPT test and the 20-week ultrasound I’m not sure it did what I was wanting it to do. Once I got the results I wanted to “know” what the gender was and feel free to buy any clothes I liked and only search for names for that gender. Instead, I found myself buying gender-neutral clothes and being very apprehensive about buying boy clothes because of the what-ifs. When looking for a name I’d find myself still saving the girl names I liked because of the what-ifs. So I did not get the peace of mind I was looking for.
I thought if I knew I did everything I could to not contaminate it I’d feel reassured that the results were right, but it just had me second-guessing. I didn’t want to get attached to an idea and then weeks or months later find out it wasn’t true. It’d feel like a heartbreak for no reason no matter what the results were.
I was thinking we wouldn’t be able to take the NIPT test until much further into my pregnancy, but I was asked by my doctor if I’d like to at 11 weeks. Now knowing that I can find out with a test I personally feel confident in at 11ish weeks as the test can take a week or two to get the results back. I personally probably will decide to wait for at least the NIPT test if not longer in the future. Who knows though! I may really want to know early or have an idea and may want to take another SneakPeek test for fun in any future pregnancies.
I will say that my insurance covers the NIPT test fully which is a major blessing for me as I do not have to pay hundreds out of pocket. So personally for me, it makes more sense to only do the test that I feel most confident in and is free to me, rather than paying for a test that I do not feel as confident in. Only to take the other test a few weeks later.
If your insurance does not cover the NIPT test you may want to take the SneakPeek test as it is cheaper if you do not want to find out about the other genetic testing results you get from the NIPT test or can not afford it.
What others have told me about their experience
I’ve heard online that many people have had problems with this test. How well they cleaned and followed directions I can not speak to, but this is what led me to being scared of taking it and not having full trust in the results we received.
People in my life have all had accurate results for a total of 5 pregnancies that people have used this test for. One person who was like me had a hard time believing it was real. Another had full trust in it. So I can’t speak to how you may feel about your results when they come in and you may be surprised on how you feel when they do. You may have doubts when you didn’t think you would or you may fully trust it when you didn’t think you would.
If you are going to do it make sure you clean well and follow the instructions well. This is what I and the people around me did that did get accurate results. We also all took different kinds of SneakPeek tests. Some of us did the Snap test, others did the finger poke test. Other’s did the SneakPeek test where you go into a place to get your blood drawn and they send it in.
Going in to get your blood drawn is supposed to be very accurate, but again I have heard stories online that some people still got a false result. Again, I can not speak to the possibility of cross-contamination as I was not there. Just something to keep in mind,
Are you going to take the SneakPeek test and were your results accurate?
There are pros and cons to the test for sure! With cleaning and following the directions I had accurate results. It may just come down to personality types on whether this test is a good choice for you.
If you are someone who can do their due diligence to make sure they don’t accidentally alter the test results it may be a good fit for you to try if you are wanting to do so. Keep in mind that there still is a possibility of inaccurate results as well as you may have your own doubts.
